Triple Bogie

Working with Alex was an absolute pleasure. Both personally and technically, he has shown to be highly professional, communicative, and knowledgeable.

We came to Starlight to get drum tracks down for 9 songs. Alex was super welcoming and accommodating, and we’re very happy with the sounds we got. His studio is loaded with cool gear, and his setup is very functional. I definitely had a lot of questions about what he was working with, and not only was he happy to answer them, but he gave me a ton of tips on home-recording that I could take home myself.

Recording at Starlight is significantly less expensive than most studios in the area. If you’re funding your own project and need some quality recordings, this is the place to go.

Working with Alex was amazing!

His attention to detail and professionalism made him a breeze to work with.

Alex took the time to familiarize himself with the artistic direction we wanted to go in and I think the recordings showcase that brilliantly.

He’s an easy recommendation to anyone looking for a producer to help them with their vision.

We fell in love with the studio right away!

It's comfortable, has plenty of great gear to mess around with, and a killer sounding backline drum kit.

The overall quality and attention to detail from Alex is above and beyond.

Highly recommend!

Alex has played an integral role in the development, sound, and scope of the projects I have recorded with him at Starlight Studios.

He has a thoughtful approach to the way he runs his studio; with a refreshing blend of expertise in the field of audio engineering and a deep understanding of musicality, and composition.

He has an artistic vision that takes your ideas and fully realizes them.

Alex's home studio is not to be underestimated. With a rich accumulation of specialized equipment, a discerning ear, and a kind and professional producer at all your disposal, I can't recommend his studio enough.

Alex helped me to hear what each of my tracks needed, and guided me towards a better final product while still respecting my own artistic preferences.

With a price point well below studios of an equal caliber, Starlight Studios is the obvious choice for up and coming musicians in Seattle.

Alex is the first guy I come to when I want to record.

He’s professional, efficient, and always down to experiment. He’s helped me achieve my vision for songs through multiple projects and styles and I would pick him again and again!

Come to Alex if you want a down to earth experience with someone who will get excited with you about your music

The Bags: The Bags Ep

I first heard Alex’s applications to music through his band laughingstock. I was prepared to hear what most local bands sound like—underdeveloped. What I heard was not at all this. Laughingstock’s production value was nothing short of professional and high quality, and Alex was an integral part of making that happen.

My personal experience with Alex was phenomenal. As a musician himself, Alex really understands how the instruments work, and ultimately, how they should sound. Alex was thorough with the recording process, ensuring quality of the final product. Moreover, Alex was incredibly skillful with his ability to mix and produce raw recordings. You would never guess these songs were recorded inside of a 20-year-old’s living room.

My experience with Alex was nothing short of excellent! It was very clear that Alex understood what my end vision was, and had the expertise necessary to manifest it. Throughout the recording process Alex was very receptive to new ideas, and offered arrangement and composition ideas of his own. Many of Alex’s ideas are now my favorite details in the songs. Our recording time was exceptionally productive. Every time I booked a recording session we were left with extra time at the end to tie up loose ends and add finishing details.

During the mixing process Alex sent me many drafts and was always willing to make tweaks to the mixes. Some of my change suggestions were more than a little nit-picky, but Alex always made the changes quickly and without complaint! The end result was a set of songs that are indistinguishable from recordings made in a professional studio.

Magic from the past

Ever wonder why old recordings sound richer, fuller, warmer, and more cohesive than many modern productions? Much of that sound comes from the tape machines used to record music up until around the 1990's when digital recording started to become much more ubiquitous.

Digital recording is superior to recording to tape in many aspects. It is generally faster, easier to edit, and virtually unlimited in terms of track counts and flexibility.

However, the limitations of recording to tape are what make it an awesome, magical and inspiring medium to record with. The natural vibe that comes from tracking to tape is unmistakable. Set track counts means making bold creative decisions, and limited editing capabilities force the artist to deliver inspired performances. Put simply: with tape there are no do-overs.

Starlight Studios is home to a Tascam 34 tape deck. A 4-track 1/4 inch recorder, perfectly calibrated and integrated into our workspace. The studio has a modular design, which allows the deck to be integrated into every session if desired.

Recording to tape is not right for every project, but please contact us if you'd like to track your project on our deck. We look forward to hearing from you!
